Documents Required for Your Personal Tax Return

To ensure your personal tax return is accurate, we need proof of all income and deductions. Missing a document can trigger a SARS audit or cause you to lose out on a valid refund. Please prepare the following:

Income Sources

SARS receives data from banks and employers, but you must verify it. We need:

  • IRP5 / IT3(a): From your employer.
  • IT3(b): Interest certificates from banks.
  • IT3(c): Capital gains or losses.
  • Rental Income: Spreadsheets of rental profit/loss.
  • Crypto Assets: Trading reports (Luno, VALR, etc).
Deductions & Allowances

You can reduce your tax liability by claiming these valid expenses:

  • Medical Aid: Tax certificate for your contributions.
  • Retirement Annuity: The IT3(f) certificate.
  • Donations: Section 18A certificates.
  • Travel Logbook: Mandatory if you receive a travel allowance.
  • Home Office: If you work mainly from home (specific rules apply).

Frequently Asked Questions about Personal Tax Returns

The tax season for non-provisional taxpayers usually opens in July and closes in October each year. For provisional taxpayers (freelancers, business owners, or those with rental income), the deadline to submit the final personal tax return is typically in January of the following year. Missing these dates leads to immediate administrative penalties from SARS.

SARS has stated that if you earn under R500,000 from a single employer and have no other deductions (like Medical Aid or Retirement Annuity), you *may* not need to file. However, we strongly recommend filing a personal tax return anyway. This ensures you have a compliant tax clearance history, which is often required for bank loans, visas, or future employment.

SARS may automatically calculate your tax based on data they receive from banks and employers. They will send you an SMS stating you have been "Auto-Assessed." Do not just accept this. SARS does not know about your additional medical expenses, travel logbooks, or other deductions. Always have a tax practitioner review your auto-assessment before the deadline to ensure you aren't paying too much tax.
